RBT Exam Format & the 6 Content Areas (2026, 3rd-Edition Task List)

The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) certification is the entry-level credential in applied behavior analysis, granted by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). RBTs deliver behavior-analytic services under the close supervision of a qualified supervisor. Knowing the exam format before test day removes surprises and lets you train under realistic conditions.

How many questions and how long?

The RBT exam has 85 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 75 are scored and 10 are unscored pilot questions that look identical to the rest. Every question has four options and one correct answer. You get 90 minutes, and the exam is delivered by computer at a Pearson VUE testing center. That is a little over a minute per question, so timed practice matters as much as content.

The 6 content areas (2026 Test Content Outline, 3rd edition)

Starting in 2026 the exam follows the RBT Test Content Outline (3rd ed.), which organizes 43 tasks into six areas. The number of scored questions is weighted, so a smart study plan spends the most time where the exam asks the most:

• Behavior Acquisition (25%): reinforcement, prompting and fading, chaining, shaping, discrete-trial and naturalistic teaching, token economies. The largest area.
• Behavior Reduction (19%): functions of behavior, antecedent interventions, differential reinforcement (DRO, DRA, DRI, DRL), extinction and its side effects.
• Data Collection and Graphing (17%): continuous and discontinuous measurement, permanent product, graphing, rate and percentage calculations, reading trends.
• Ethics (15%): scope of practice, supervision, confidentiality, dual relationships, gifts, and professional conduct under the RBT Ethics Code (2.0).
• Documentation and Reporting (13%): objective session notes, reporting variables that affect progress, communicating with the supervisor.
• Behavior Assessment (11%): preference assessments and the technician's role in skill and functional assessments.

What the questions are like

RBT items are application-based and scenario-driven, not simple definitions. A typical question describes a short situation and asks which procedure is being used or what the correct next step is. The wrong answers are usually the sibling procedure (for example DRO versus DRI, or positive versus negative reinforcement), so you need to discriminate between concepts, not just recognize a term.

How it is scored

The exam is pass or fail. The passing score is set by a panel of subject-matter experts and converted to a scaled score, and the BACB does not publish the exact number. Your result is based on overall performance across all areas, not a separate score for each area.

How to prepare

• Train timed. Take full-length, 85-question timed mocks so the clock feels normal.
• Study by area. Use per-area analytics to find weak spots and drill them, starting with Behavior Acquisition and Behavior Reduction.
• Review every miss. Read why the right answer is right and why each distractor is wrong.
• Study in your language. Explanations available in English and Spanish help if English is your second language.
