How to Study for the BCBA Exam: A 6-Week Plan
Passing the BCBA exam is less about cramming and more about structured, measured practice. Here is a simple six-week plan you can adapt to your schedule.
Weeks 1 and 2: Baseline and foundations
Take a timed sample exam early to get a baseline and see your per-domain scores. Spend these weeks on the foundational concepts and the domains where you scored lowest. Do short, focused practice sets rather than marathon sessions.
Weeks 3 and 4: Domain drilling
Work through one or two content domains at a time. After each set, review every question you missed and write a one-line reason in your own words. This "explain it back" habit is one of the highest-yield study techniques.
Week 5: Full-length mocks
Sit at least two full-length, timed mock exams under realistic conditions. Quiet room, no notes, four-hour clock. The goal is endurance and pacing, not just content. Use the per-domain breakdown to target your final week.
Week 6: Targeted review and rest
Re-drill only your weakest domains and the questions you previously missed. Taper the volume in the last two days and prioritize sleep. A rested brain recalls and reasons better than a crammed one.
Principles that make it work
- Practice retrieval, not re-reading. Answering questions beats highlighting notes.
- Space it out. Short daily sessions beat occasional long ones.
- Measure. Track your scores by domain so effort goes where it counts.
