BCBA Exam Format & Content Domains (2026 Guide)
The Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) exam is a computer-based, multiple-choice exam that tests applied behavior-analytic knowledge across a defined content outline. Knowing the format before you sit it removes surprises and lets you train under realistic conditions.
How many questions and how long?
The exam currently contains 185 multiple-choice questions (a mix of scored and unscored pilot items) with a four-hour time limit. That pace. Just over a minute per question. Is exactly why timed, full-length practice matters: comprehension is not enough if you run out of time.
Content domains
Questions are distributed across the content outline's domains (foundations and concepts through to applied skills such as assessment, intervention, and supervision). A strong study plan is weighted to those domains rather than spread evenly, so you spend the most time where the exam asks the most questions.
Question style
Most items are scenario-based: you read a short clinical situation and choose the best action or the term that fits. Memorizing definitions is not enough. You need to apply concepts to novel cases, which is the skill a good mock exam builds.
How to prepare
- Train timed. Take full-length, timed mocks so the clock feels normal.
- Study by domain. Use per-domain analytics to find weak areas and drill them.
- Review every miss. Read the explanation for why the right answer is right and the others are wrong.
